A Desktop or Laptop computer with Windows operating system running Internet Explorer Version 5.5 minimum. We recomment Internet Explorere Version 8 or above. We specialise in Windows, so if you run something different e.g. Apple Mac or Linux, the support we can provide will be more limited.

Operating system
ResNet supports Windows Vista, Windows 2000, Windows XP (XP Service
packs 2 and 3), Windows 7, and Mac OS 9/10/X running Internet Explorer Version 5.5 minimum (or equivalent browser). You must ensure that you have a copy of the installation CD (or the pre-installed copy of the installation on your hard disk).
-
A network card
If your computer does not already have one fitted, you will need to fit a network card, also known as a network adapter, Ethernet adaptor or network interface card (NIC). ResNet is designed to work with any suitably configured 10 or 10/100 network adaptor. Please note: a network adaptor is not a modem (or modem card) - a modem is of no use with ResNet.
You must also have installed the correct driver software for your network card to be able to configure the card to work on the ResNet network.
-
Network cards for desktop computers
For desktop computers, you will require an internal 10 or 10/100 network card with an RJ45 connector. There are various network cards on the market such as 3com or Netgear, which range in price and quality. These are available from most PC suppliers who will be able to advise. If you have an old computer, check with your supplier whether a PCI network card can be fitted. The supplier will be able to recommend the appropriate card.
-
Network cards for laptop computers
Laptop computers may come with an in-built network card. If not, you will need a PCMCIA network card. Check with your supplier for a suitable PCMCIA network card. If your laptop is too old, you may not be able to insert a network card.
-
External network cards
There are various external USB to Ethernet adaptors now available. These are convenient as they can be moved from one computer to another, provided the driver software is installed. They can be used with both laptop and desktop computers as long as the computer has a USB port.
-
A monitor
You will need a monitor if you are not using a laptop computer.
-
A network cable
We will supply you with a network cable but if you bring your own, it must be a UTP Category 5e patch cable with an RJ45 connector.
-
Anti-virus software
It is essential that you install anti-virus software onto your computer before connecting to the ResNet service.
Firewall
It is essential that you have a Windows Firewall enabled
