Can IT Services fix my broken PC or laptop?
I am having problems viewing Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo etc, why?
The most common reason will be that the proxy settings on the computer are not correctly set. Please check the setup instructions on the ResNet page. If you are sure these settings are correct and you still cannot connect, you might be infected with a virus or spyware which could be causing an issue. Run a scan with your Anti virus software. If you are still experiencing problems, please contact IT Support Centre.
Can I connect network devices to ResNet i.e. Wireless access point, switch, hub etc)
ResNet does not allow any network devices to be connected to ResNet. If you try this, your port may become disabled. Network bridging on machines may also disable your port.
Can I use my web cam on ResNet?
Webcams will function over ResNet with Yahoo messenger and Skype. Unfortunately, msn messenger will not work over ResNet due to security issues
Can I connect to gaming servers?
Some online games may work but we do not support online gaming and you may find that you cannot connect to gaming servers. Email us (resnet@uwe.ac.uk) the ports that the game use and where you are staying, and we can confirm if those ports are open on the ResNet firewall.
My connection times out around every five minutes, why?
In the past we have had some users experiencing connection time outs when running a firewall on their PC. In particular, we have noticed problems with Norton Internet Security. If you are experiencing regular time outs with the service, please try disabling your firewall software.
I am getting an 'invalid username or password' message when I attempt to log in?
You will need to use your UWE login username and password (not the Bristol Institute of Technology username and password) to access ResNet. Make sure CAPS LOCK is not enabled as your password is CASE SENSITIVE.
Getting 'user is already logged in' message?
If you do not log out of ResNet correctly you might see this message next time you access the service. A reboot of the PC should solve the issue. If the message persists, please contact the IT Support Centre
You should have an IP address beginning with 164.11.*.* on resnet
If you are still unable to connect to ResNet, you may have a different IP address set in your network adapter. For windows machines :- To change this, please go into Control Panel, network sharing centre, manage network connections, right click Local Area Connection, choose properties, select IPv4 then select ‘obtain automatically’ for both IP address and DNS address.
When I log in to ResNet I get a message telling me an intrusion has been detected, why?
If you see this message when you log in to ResNet it means we have detected abnormal internet traffic coming from your machine. This could be the result of peer to peer software running on your computer or a virus on your machine. Please contact the IT Support Centre.
What is Skype and will it run on ResNet?
Skype is a free communication tool which allows users to speak to other people running the software across the internet. Simply sign in using your Skype username and password.
Why won't msn messenger connect for voice and webcams?
Due to their design, msn and windows messenger client require a large number of ports to be opened to set up voice and webcam communications. Opening these would compromise network security. You can use Yahoo messenger as an alternative
Why won’t Mac Messenger connect?
You can sign into Mac Messenger but you will first need to configure the proxy address within MAC Messenger.
What is peer to peer software and can I use it on ResNet?
Examples of peer to peer software include Kazaa, Limewire, E-mule/E-donkey, Soul Seek, Aquisition and Bittorrent. There are many others. These applications can be used to illegally download copyrighted files such as music, films and games and can slow down the ResNet service for all users. It is for this reason that such software is forbidden on ResNet.
Can I use my Xbox/Playstation on ResNet?
Currently only the Xbox will connect to ResNet
Can I play internet games?
You can play online web based games on ResNet but you may find you cannot connect to online game servers. We do not support online gaming, however, email resnet@uwe.ac.uk with the game name the ports it uses and where your staying we can then check if the ports on the firewall. Please note: - it is prohibited to use ResNet for financial gain (poker websites)
Can I connect more than one machine to Resnet simultaneously?
ResNet only permits one device to be connected at one time. To connect a different machine to ResNet unplug the network cable and then leave 3-5mins before plugging the cable into the other machine. If this is done too soon then the port may become disabled.
Ventrillo is not connecting to ResNet
The standard ports that are open on ResNet are 3784, 6100 if you require a specific port then email resnet@uwe.ac.uk with the port number and where your staying.
Can I access my network (H:) drive on ResNet?
You can access your network H: drive through ResNet to transfer files from your computer to your network storage space. To do this visit http://xa.uwe.ac.uk
Can I print to the student PHAROS printing system from ResNet?
You can print to pharos using your own personal/computer from Resnet or NetPlus. Please click the link below for further info: http://www.uwe.ac.uk/its/knowledgebase/helpdesk/printing/index.shtml#P102_3990
Can I set up my mail client to receive and send e-mail on ResNet?
You should be able to set up your e-mail client to receive and send e-mails from your web mail and personal e-mail accounts; all e-mail clients are different, but the main settings you will need to enter are as follows:

ResNet is not working in my room?
Firstly make sure you have read the setup instructions and the above FAQs, you can next try connecting your machine in your flat mates room. If that was successful then it could be that your ResNet port is disabled or damaged. Please contact the IT Support Centre who will be able to resolve this.
Can IT services fix my broken PC or laptop?
The IT Support Centre can offer advice and guidance with broken PC equipment but they are unable to fix hardware issues. If your machine needs the operating system reinstalled then you are required to bring the necessary recovery or windows disks. IT Services do not have copies of any Microsoft software.
