The system is running very slowly, it's not even keeping up with my typing, what should I do?

There are various reasons why the Thin Client Windows system might be running slowly.

  • Because of the way Thin Client technology works it relies heavily on the network. If there are several Thick Client users doing a lot of network-intensive work (e.g. downloading big files from the internet) on the same subnet as your thin client terminal, then it is possible that this will affect the performance of the system as experienced by you. For example, it may take a while for mouse clicks and keypresses to take effect.
  • There may be a "stuck process" on one of the Thin Client Terminal Servers. All the software you use via thin client runs on one of a group of Windows Terminal Servers, not on the PC on your desk. Therefore if a piece of software goes wrong it could be affecting all of the users who are also logged in to the same terminal server as you. The Terminal Servers are very powerful machines, with four Pentium Xeon processors each and a considerable amount of memory, each server usually supports about forty users simultaneously. However, if a piece of software goes wrong it can sometimes tie up one of those processors completely (normally the processors run at about 10-20% of their full capacity). This then places the remaining processors in the server under higher load, and can cause performance to degrade. We monitor the servers all the time and if we notice a process running with a full CPU usage we will usually give you a call to find out what's happening. However, it is still important for you to phone us if a piece of software you are using stops responding for a significant period of time, or appears to have gone wrong.
