Printing with Pharos
How To Open Your Pharos Print Account
Step One – sending your print job from the PC
Step Two – Releasing the print job
Introduction
UWE offers a chargeable student printing system called Pharos. This is created automatically as part of your Student Computer Username. Once you have credited your Pharos account, you can print from PCs in any student PC lab or in any of the Campus Libraries. Print stations can be found in 2B017 (the 24 hour PC Room at Frenchay), the Libraries and at various other locations throughout the University. A list of the print station locations is available.
Most locations have a Pharos print station with a black and white A4 printer. Some stations also provide colour and A3 output.
How To Open Your Pharos Print Account
Click this link for a list of locations where you can open or credit your Pharos print account. The minimum credit to your account on all occasions is £1.00. Any balance outstanding on your account at the end of your course can be refunded by the Cash Office.

Printing
Step One – sending your print job from the PC
In your application (e.g. Word) open the printer window :-
Press
OR |
|
Select <File>.<Print>
Select the print
Queue required.
The main print queues are:
BW-A4 – Black & White A4
BW–A3 – Black & White A3
COL-A4 – Colour A4
COL-A3 – Colour A3
Click <OK> to print file.

Step Two – Releasing the print job
Log on to an appropriate Print station. You must use one that has a suitable printer; if you have chosen the colour A4 queue you will not see your job(s), if you login to a Print station that only has a black and white printer attached to it.
When you have logged on to the Print station, you will see the job(s) you have sent to print. Click on one, the price of that job will show at the bottom of the screen. Then click on the Print button and the job will print and the cost will be deducted from your account. (If the cost is incorrect then consult the IT Support Centre, as it is likely that it will not print out as you expect).
These instructions are also on posters next to the printers.
Print jobs remain on the queues for 8 hours and are then deleted if they haven’t been sent to a printer. If a print job is deleted, there is no charge to your account.
NB Duplex printing is provided by the Bristol Institute of Technology only.
Paper/toner
IT Services is responsible for the day to day running of the printers in 2B017 and will fill them with paper and change the toner cartridges when necessary. Supplies for other printers should be requested from the relevant Faculty or department.
Print from your Windows or Mac laptop using Pharos
It is now possible for you to print using Pharos from your own computer/laptop.
There are two installer links below. Simply, choose whichever link corresponds to you. Run the installer, and the Printers and queues will be setup for you.
The printers available using this facility are BW-A4, BW-A3, COL-A4, COL-A3
When you print to a Pharos printer, a pop up box will open requesting you to enter your username and password to secure your document. You will then be able to release the print job when required.
N.B. You should log into the student NetPlus system before attempting this. Otherwise, any prints made will fail.
This is easy to do and just involves you opening your web browser and logging in with your user credentials as soon as you get a network connection.
Mac users who click the above link will receive a zip file. The file will usually try and open with the “stuffit expander” (The standard Mac unzipping tool)
Click “OK” to this and you will find it will have placed a popup.pkg file on your desktop. Or, you can save the file and run at your convenience.
Possible Problems
If the printout is faint or crumpled:
Follow Step One above and re-send your work to the appropriate print queue. Do NOT do Step Two.
If you are on Frenchay campus, bring the faint or crumpled prints to the IT Support Centre in 3D028a. We will be able to re-print the work free of charge. You must supply the faulty printouts for this to be done. If you are on another campus, go to the Enquiry desk in the campus Library and they will either re-print the work or be able to contact the IT Support Centre on your behalf.
Please tell us which printer is faulty so it can be repaired quickly.
Please note that the IT Support Centre can only re-print jobs; we cannot re-credit your Pharos account.
