Web filtering notification

Please note that the University is ensuring safe use of the internet and therefore is now blocking web sites which present (or can present) a risk to the University and its users.

It will only concern your browsing requests to sites that are classified as illegal, along with sites that promote spyware, proxy avoidance and sites where the promotion of student academic submissions are copied or provided. It will be possible to add to this list over time, should it become clear that unsuitable material is being accessed.

Illegal sites include certain potential terrorist organisations, child pornography, drug related and others. At this stage, you will receive a warning message as outlined below, and you will not be able to continue with your access attempt. As with all software, it is possible to be blocked from legitimate sites occasionally or be allowed to view non-legitimate sites. If you feel that the sites are being incorrectly blocked you can of course contact our service desk team and query the incident.

This should have little or no impact on your daily work activities, but it does provide everybody with a level of comfort and protection from inadvertently straying into some risky areas.

You may come across this message when trying to access a non-authorised web site:-

"The access to the web site has been denied in accordance with the IT acceptable use policy. Please check section "Access to the internet". The unauthorised web sites have been listed in line with other organisations and educational authorities. Should you feel unduly unable to access a legitimate web site, please contact the IT Support Centre. IT Services."
