UWE Card: FAQs

Q: What is the new UWE Card?
UWE Card is a new smart card for use by all staff, students and visitors. It has replaced the old staff, student and visitor cards.

Q: Why has the university introduced a new card?
UWE has upgraded its access and security systems and as a result moved away from swipe access readers to proximity readers. As a consequence a new type of smart card is required. The new cards will also support new functions such as cashless catering which are expected to be introduced in the near future.

Q: Will the changes affect me?
Yes, all students (both new and current) and members of staff across all UWE owned sites will require a replacement card as a result of the changes being implemented.

Q: Will I be able to continue to use my old card?
Your old card will not give you access to the new locks, but some people will required to retain their old card for other purposes for a period of time (e.g. TRAKA cabinets). So please do not destroy your old card until advised

Q: How can I pick up my replacement card?
To see when you can pick up your new card please refer to the ‘Receiving your Campus Card’ pages.

Q: What are the primary functions of UWE Card?
The main functions of the card include:
• Identification: Your UWE Card will be your main source of identification whilst on UWE premises and should be carried with you at all times.
• Access control: Security and access throughout UWE campuses will be improved with your new UWE Card operating a fully networked, contactless / proximity system of entry.
• Library borrowing: You new UWE Card will allow you to continue using the library services, including access to the library, and loaning of resources.

Q: What should I do if my UWE Card is lost or stolen?
If your UWE Card is lost or stolen, then this should be immediately reported to the UWE security office (1E20) or call +44 0117 32 82866 or ext 82866.

Q: How much will a replacement card cost?
A replacement card can be applied for through the online store for a charge. If your card has been stolen then a replacement card will be provided for free subject to the provision of a valid police crime reference number.

Q: My card is faulty and does not work, what should I do?
If your UWE Card is faulty contact security office on uwecard@uwe.ac.uk or ext 82866. If the card is deemed to be faulty as a result of misuse / damage then a replacement charge may be applied at the discretion of the security office staff.

Q: How will my information contained on the card be used (data protection)?
The information held for the UWE Card will only be used by the University of the West of England to confirm the holder as a member or employee of the University of the West of England, to provide identification and appropriate door access and associated services. In the event of a dispute, the University may rely fully on the data held on the UWE Card or associated account and related hardware as conclusive evidence of transaction history. The University may also rely on any data on the UWE Card as conclusive evidence of the matters recorded in them and that the transactions described by them actually occurred. Q: How can I care for my card?
To ensure durability and validity of your UWE Card

  • Keep it in a safe carrying case (such as a wallet or cardholder)
  • Keep away from magnets and computers to avoid magnetic damage
  • Do not punch holes in your card
  • Do not tamper with the information or picture printed on the card
  • Do not bend the card
  • Avoid exposing the card to excessive heat
  • Do not wash the card or use it for any purpose it was not designed for

Q: I am a new student starting at the university in September 2012, what do I need to do to receive a card?
As part of the registration process you will be issued your card

Q: I live in University Managed Accommodation will I still need two cards?
Where you hold a UWE accommodation card as well as your student ID card, on receipt of your replacement ID card you will still require to carry two cards.
