Royal Mail
Pricing in proportion

Updated Information 2 April 2013

Royal Mail introduced pricing in proportion (PiP) on 21 August 2006. PiP has changed the way Royal Mail charges for letters and packets to take account of the size, thickness and weight of the item to be posted.
From April 2013, the guidelines for sizing to determine what price the postage for your item will cost, was updated. Please see the Royal Mail PIP guide for more details.

There are a few key points to consider when packaging items, to ensure we are keeping postage costs at a minimum for the University.

  • Think – First or Second class?

Does it need to be there tomorrow?

  • Are you using the right sized envelope?

By folding an A4 document in half and posting this in a C5 envelope instead of C4 you could save a minimum of £0.25 per letter sent second class and £0.24 per letter sent first class!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – POSTAGE COST SAVING TIPS

GUSSET ENVELOPES

Gusset Envelopes are larger than standard C4 envelopes which takes the cost of the postage up from a Large Letter to a Small Parcel, increasing the cost of posting this 1st class by £2.10 for each parcel sent!
When using a C4 gusset envelope, fold the envelope to the size of the contents, ideally to the second crease on the envelope, before sealing. This will reduce the size of the envelope to within the Large Letter measurements, consequently creating the saving.

JIFFY BAGS – SIZE 7

Size 7 Jiffy bags are large padded envelopes. When folded carefully, to the size of the contents, this envelope should stay in the Small Parcel measurements.
A saving of £2.00 or more can be made by taking this small measure, to keep the envelope size within the Small Parcel measurements.
