Exhibition and Conference Centre Sustainability Statement
At the UWE Exhibition and Conference Centre, we know that we have a long way to go before we can confidently say that we are 'carbon neutral' but we are working hard to make positive changes against short timescales and fulfil our commitment to the UWE Sustainability Strategy (92KB).
Firstly, we are looking closely at our energy usage and have already installed low energy lighting through most of the building. We aim to progressively replace all remaining traditional light bulbs with energy efficient ones.
Small reminders for our staff and delegates to 'turn off the lights' may seem old fashioned but these measures really make a difference in the long term.
Energy efficient hand dryers have recently been installed, using 80 per cent less energy than the traditional warm air hand dryer and have also been proven to be more ecologically sound than paper towels.
Our commitment to sustainability
We will:
- Promote and champion recycling of materials provided for delegates and introduce a measured scheme for recording this
- Look to reduce paper usage and wastage- using when valid, IT solutions
- Research and publish details on our website of a validated scheme which International and other delegates / conference organisers can use to green their events
- Communicate our progress and the results of steps taken by customers on our website using ideas and feedback wherever possible
- Endeavour to use only suppliers who have a sound environmental policy in place and wherever possible source local home grown produce and use environmentally responsible products accordingly
- Use Fair Trade / Ethically Traded products beyond the provision of tea and coffee wherever possible
- Encourage use of public transport, bike and train car sharing
- Maintain the grounds in an environmentally sensitive way having regard to the protection of natural habitat and local wildlife
- Strive to continually improve our environmental performance and minimise the social impact and activities by periodically reviewing our environmental policy in light of our current and planned future activities
- Ensure guests and staff are aware of the environmental issues and responsibilities they have for the environment, through regular communication by induction, meetings, training and regular guest information.
