News and Achievements

Paul Hoggett and Tom Crompton (Change Strategist, World Wildlife Fund) organized a seminar "Climate Change and Human Flourishing", bringing together political and social theorists and climate change activists on 15th January 2010. Speakers included Nick Buttle (Politics, UWE), Ruth Levitas (Sociology, Bristol), Mark Vernon (Philosophy, Birkbeck) and Mike Rustin (editor Soundings). The seminar explored the need to develop alternatives to green consumerist and utitlitarian 'happiness' models of wellbeing.

Simon Thompson is co-organising The Politics of Misrecognition Conference to be held in January 2010 with colleagues from Bristol and Southampton universities

Gunter Walzenbach has been awarded a fellowship as an 'International Scholar' with the Open Society Institute at Black Sea State University for the period from 2009-2010.

Kate Flynn, has been awarded a European Union/EuropeAid grant of €212,997 (£190,122) for a twenty-one month project, starting in April 2010, entitled 'Reconciliation and Peace Economics in Cyprus'. The project is part of the EU's Cypriot Civil Society in Action II programme.

The project aims to promote improved relations between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots through applied social research which will lead to a better understanding of the issues affecting trust and perceptions of mutual interests. The project team, led by Dr Flynn, includes UWE colleagues Professor Derek Braddon (Bristol Business School), Christian Dadomo (Bristol Law School) and Dr Tony King (Department of Politics). Lisa Harrison is a member of the cross-faculty project SCOOP (Socioeconomic sciences: Communicating Outcomes Oriented to Policy), a new and innovative EU-funded project, aiming to facilitate the dissemination of socio-economic research funded under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) to policy makers, civil society organisations, the business community and the media, and to build the communication skills of researchers in the fields of socio-economic research and humanities.

As a member of its College of External Review (CER) Alan Greer provided external reviews of research proposals to the 2009 call by the Alberta Prion Research Institute (funded by the Government of Alberta).

Dimitrios Christopoulos co-organised the 5th UKSNA conference in London (July 2009).  He was recently elected Chair of the UK Social Network Analysis Association, and recently  completed the first phase of Science City Bristol network analysis project

Lisa Harrison (with Lawrence Saez) co-authored an article on the history of the Political Studies Association for the New Statesman’s Guide to Studying Politics 2010
