Welcome to the Department of Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies
I am pleased to welcome you to UWE’s Department of Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies web-site. We offer a range of programmes of study based on modules in Modern Foreign Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies, all of which are taught by a team of well-qualified and enthusiastic academics. The department has 40 years of expertise in teaching and researching in language and communication. As a result UWE language graduates have built up a strong reputation in the workplace both in the UK and further afield.
The need for people in the workplace with sound language skills is becoming more and more important in an increasingly globalised world. Here at UWE we offer practical modern foreign language study with the emphasis on the contemporary and on communication. In addition there is a growing awareness of the importance of the subject area of linguistics as a means of understanding the processes of communication.
Many of our programmes of study are offered as distance learning courses which provide a flexible and inclusive means of accessing our expertise across the globe.
