Research

I am interested in an approach to metaphor that I describe as Critical Metaphor Analysis whose purpose is to explore the rhetorical motivation and influence of metaphor choice in discourse types that include political speeches, religious texts and other persuasive areas of language use; this approach is described and illustrated in my (2004) and (2005) publications. I have extended this approach to leadership communication by integrating non-verbal semiotic modes – such as symbols and symbolic actions – to produce a general theory for the ‘design of leadership style’ (Charteris-Black 2007). Previously I have undertaken a number of contrastive linguistic studies of figurative language (e.g. English and Malay) and considered their implications for second language learning and other applied linguistic contexts. Most of my work is of empirical nature so that theoretical claims are based in evidence from language use; it draws extensively on language corpora.

My current research interests are:

  • figurative language
  • persuasive communication
  • cognitive linguistics
  • corpus-based research
  • phraseology
  • vocabulary learning
Teaching

I teach on the first year module entitled Introduction to Text Linguistics and have developed a third year module Critical Text Analysis.

Doctoral Supervision

I have supervised theses in contrastive discourse analysis and contrastive phraseology.

Other Roles

I have reviewed submissions for a range of journals including Applied Linguistics, System and English for Specific Purposes. I have been an invited speaker on several BBC Radio 4 broadcasts and been involved in other knowledge exchange activities.
