Honours. Beeching was elected President of the Association for French Language Learning. Charteris-Black was elected to the Governing Board of the newly formed UK Cognitive Linguistics Association. Coates is Honorary Director of the Survey of English Place-names, Member of the AHRC peer review college, and elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts 2001. Coates was Chair of the ESRC Research Training Recognition Panel for Linguistics (2000-1), and Treffers-Daller served on the same panel from 2005-2007. Daller obtained the Language Award for Export for Masters in European Business in 2003 (regional) and 2005 (nation-wide). Treffers-Daller was elected Consulting Member of the Committee of International Symposium on Bilingualism.

Invited papers. Beeching was invited to give two research seminars at universities in France (Nanterre and Aix-en-Provence) and one in the UK (Bristol). Charteris-Black was invited to a colloquium at an international conference in Rome, and accepted two invitations to give research seminars (Brunel, Southampton). Coates was invited to five colloquia or international conferences (including Finland and Croatia) and was invited twice to lecture in the UK (Bangor). Daller was invited to give seminars in Taiwan and at three universities in the UK (London, Newcastle, Oxford). Sakel was invited ten times to participate in colloquia at international conferences (including Aarhus, Berlin, Paris and Utrecht), five times to give papers in Manchester and six times abroad (Nijmegen, Leipzig). Treffers-Daller was invited three times to a conference abroad (Bayreuth, Montreal, Nijmegen) and four times to give seminars in the UK (Bangor, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff).

Service to the profession. Coates is General Editor of the publications of the English Place-Name Society, including its annual Journal; Consulting Editor of Linguistics since 1983; Chair of the Editorial Board of Onoma since 1999; Secretary, International Council of Onomastic Sciences 2002-8; and was Committee member, Society of Name Studies in Britain and Ireland 2002-5; President, English Place-Name Society 1999-2003; Assessor, chair appointing committee in linguistics, Bahrain 2006 and Heidelberg 2007; Specialist advisor, National Research Foundation, Republic of South Africa 2006; and Adviser for research evaluation, Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, Croatia 2006. Daller is Associate Editor of The Linguistics Journal and of the Journal of English as an International Language. Sakel is Member of editorial board of the STUF journal (Sprachtypologie und Universalienforschung). Treffers-Daller is member of the Editorial Board of Bilingualism: Language and Cognition (CUP) and Impact: Studies in Language and Society (book series of Benjamins). All staff are refereeing for a wide range of international journals and book series of international publishing companies and Beeching; Charteris-Black; Coates; Treffers-Daller are involved in assessing assessment of external funding applications for AHRC, British Academy, ESRC, Leverhulme and the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Staff have also been invited to be external examiners for PhDs in Bristol, UCL, Reading, Wales/Swansea (Treffers-Daller); Queen Mary (Beeching); Chichester and Lancaster (Charteris-Black), Birmingham and Nottingham (Coates).
