Vocabulary development of bilingual children referred for speech and language therapy
The VOCABUILD project is an interdisciplinary initiative led by specialists of Linguistics, Primary Education and Speech and Language Therapy. The project focuses on vocabulary development of bilingual children, children with English as an additional language and children with Speech and Language Communication Needs.
Aims:
- To carry out a training needs analysis of Teachers in Primary Schools and Complementary Schools, and Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) in the South West of England, with respect to the support needed for young bilingual children in developing their knowledge and use of vocabulary.
- To offer a CPD event on 29 June 2010 at UWE Bristol for Primary School Teachers, School-Home Support Workers, Teachers in Complementary Schools and Speech and Language Therapists in the South West of England, focused on their immediate training and capacity development needs.
- To enable, develop and nurture a new Knowledge Exchange environment and strong partnerships between the different participating groups, which will facilitate find ways to help bilingual children in schools in the UK;
- To generate a collaborative research initiative, with a view to prepare a bid to the ESRC focused on the development of child-oriented ways to enhance children’s vocabulary knowledge and use.

Activities
An online survey about key issues in vocabulary development of bilingual children/children with SLCN. The survey aims to gather the views of a wide range of professionals in Education, Health and Social Care.Teachers, Speech and Language Therapists, EMAS workers, Bilingual co-worker, Inclusion Support Workers, Special Needs Co-ordinators and other practitioners in the field.

Royal College and Speech of Language Therapists are hosting
a CPD event: Working with bilingual children and their families on 24
November 2010

Are you developing your skills in working with bilingual children? This
study will offer you the chance to build on knowledge acquired from the
recently launched Working with bilingual children e-learning programme,
developing core skills to equip you to work confidently with bilingual
clients. You will have the opportunity to apply your learning with practical
case studies, exploring management and decision making from referral to
intervention. This national study day will examine principles applicable to
all languages. A parallel session will also explore the latest research on
the Welsh language.
