UWE Equaltiy and Diversity Photo and Imagery Competition 2009/10

The Equality and Diversity Unit called students and staff at UWE to submit the image which creatively represents the theme 'equality and diversity - what it means to you'.

Once the entries were received, a panel of judges selected 10 shortlisted images and the exhibitions took place at all campuses between December 2009 to February 2010 for students and staff to see images and vote. They could also vote online and we received a total of 1367 votes for 10 images.

The winners for the competition for 2009/10 are:

1st "Heave-Ho" by Richard Luxton, School of Life Sciences

Heave-Ho

No-matter how different, by working together everyone can contribute to a common goal. The figures represent all types of people and the chain is the common goal; with UWE enabling people to be better together.

2nd "Shoe+We" by Matt Owen, Marketing and Communication

Shoe+We

People wear shoes universally at UWE, we're all the same in that sense, but our footwear is a way in which the diversity of staff and students at UWE is clearly expressed. The assembled shoes of UWE staff and students expresses individual identities, tastes, genders and practical needs. If we were all to be barefooted, would our diverse identities be less defined? The diverse shoes working in conjunction make the shape of a circle, something they can only do together, not alone. Perhaps that is what the UWE community is all about.

3rd "Equality" by Dominic Oliver Dudley, School of Built and Natural Environment

Equality

The image colours represent diversity at UWE and the quotation speaks for itself, working with UWE's current slogan - "U+WE". The overall image translates into a feeling that everyone at UWE is working together towards equality. Very simple, but effective I believe.

Other shortlisted images are:

Opposite but the Same

"Opposite But The Same" by Nicol Caplin, School of Life Sciences

This is a long exposure of the same person in two positions so looks like a mirror image but this is representative of two beings that are essentially the same.

Human Beans

"Human Beans" by Tim Copley, Human Resources

The image shows tins of beans from various ranges from the brand leader to organic and economy ranges but ultimately they are all beans - something we all take comfort in. The warious brands symbolise the many differences there are in people but also demonstrates how we're all the same under the packaging.

Change is coming

"Change is Coming" by Heather Hammond, School of Health and Social Care

Leaves are all shapes and colours and are "Equal and Diverse" in their beauty and form.

I believe in choice

"I believe in choice" by Moon Leith, School of Creative Arts

Part of an ongoing project asking everyone I meet to finish the sentence 'I believe in...' I get everything from cheese to Jesus to Zeus!

Link together

"Link Together" by Simon Ledson, School of Creative Arts

The ability to be strong together

Sealed with skin

"Sealed with Skin" by Jo Hislop, School of Creative Arts

The variety of attitudes and opinions witin UWE and Bristol relating to multi-culture and diversity reflect each individuals experiences and this image resonates these themes for me personally. The warmth of this image, in relation to a collision of cultures, is one that I subconsciously see everyday within UWE.

Power of similarity

"Power of Similarity" by Hugo Gaggiotti, Bristol Business School

The image shows how its is possible to be diverse and equal at the same time, depending on the circumstances of our life and how diversity and similarity gives us "power" (electronic metahpor) to do things and adapt to the circumstances.
