Directly Allocated Costs
Principal Investigators and all other established academic staff
In order to retain the confidentiality of salary information for Principal Investigators and other established academic staff, it has been agreed to cost their time in salary bandings i.e. one rate will be attributed to each staffing category (i.e. Lecturer, Senior Lecture, Principal Lecturer etc.) regardless of their actual spinal column point.
Salary banding rates are calculated annually by FBS based on actual salary costs incurred within each band during the previous year, which are then indexed.
As UWE have now opted to used Salary Bandings as its method of calculating the cost of the time of Principal Investigators and other established academic staff time it is not possible to use any other method of calculating their costs.
Directly allocated staff costs are therefore calculated by multiplying the FTE (or proportion of a FTE) by the appropriate salary banding.
If an investigator or co-investigator is working less than full time on a proposal then it will be necessary to calculate what proportion of a FTE that person is working. This can be calculated by dividing the number of hours/Days/weeks worked on the project by the agreed standard working year – 1650 hours or 220 days or 44 weeks.
An example may help – assume the following
Investigator is to work – 220hrs per year on the project
Co-investigator is to work – 2 weeks per year
Therefore the calculation is:-
The Principal Investigator = 220/1650= 0.14 FTE
The Co-Investigator = 2/44=0.05 FTE
The Directly Allocated Staff costs can now be obtained by multiplying the FTE by the appropriate salary banding(salary banding rates are being applied as this retains the confidentiality of salary information – therefore all PLs are banded together as are SLs etc).
