Science Communication Unit (SCU)
The Science Communication Unit (SCU) at UWE Bristol is recognised for internationally leading research, creative approaches to practice and outstanding teaching.
SCU research seeks to bring science and society closer together, and as such we have a core interest in developing research which is societally-relevant and developed in conjunction with those who practice science communication. Our portfolio of activities is extensive, including innovative approaches to engaging diverse publics with science.
We are also committed to training would-be science communicators via our Masters programme, which focuses on developing science communication practitioners with outstanding practical skills that are underpinned by science communication theory. For those wishing to develop specific skills, we offer dedicated professional development courses and workshops.

In April 2025 I travelled to Germany for my MRes project, research I am undertaking as part of the UWE Science Communication Unit. There I explored both interdisciplinary practice as a whole and more specifically, scientist’s personal experiences of Science-Art collaborations, which will in turn, inform my research project. I’ve had an interest in Science … Continue reading "Science Communication, Speculation and Schnitzels: Exploring Science-Art Collaborations in Stuttgart and Berlin"

I thought about it multiple times during my undergraduate and Masters degrees, but for one reason or another it never felt right. When I finished my Masters, I regretted that deeply because I thought I would never have that … Continue reading "An autumn sabbatical visit to the Science Communication Unit"

Forensic science has always fascinated me—from DNA analysis, fingerprinting to blood spatter patterns. So when the chance to collaborate with the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science and the University of Dundee for my Master’s thesis came along, I jumped at the opportunity. As a child, I was fascinated by the world around me and knew from a young age that I was interested in science. Studying Biology for my BSc at the University of Sheffield introduced me to the complexity and beautiful diversity of the world’s ecosystems. I loved absorbing this fascinating information but had no desire … Continue reading "Bees and brownfields: My journey from Science Communication to PhD research"

By Matilde Marques From a young age, I always found myself torn between two passions: science and writing. For years, I thought I had to choose between them, not realizing that they could actually go hand in hand. When I discovered Science Communication, I was thrilled to learn that I could combine both loves. And … Continue reading "Learning Lab: BBC Science Focus Magazine"
