MA Education in Virtual Worlds
Education in virtual worlds is a newly emerging field, and one that is ripe for exploration, research and development. The MA Education in Virtual Worlds (MAEVW) is planned to provide an opportunity for those activities in a community of learners that will develop in a virtual world.
Learners will have the opportunity to:
- Explore the application of teaching, learning and research theories in a virtual environment,
- Develop potential learning activities of their own and test them out
- Explore the use of non-player characters and bots powered by forms of “artificial intelligence”
- Design and develop curricula specifically for delivery in virtual worlds
- Research education in virtual worlds
...and more
The MAEVW is planned to be a flexible programme of study, which will be taught entirely in the virtual world Second Life. It will be supported by online technologies that will include virtual learning environments, collaborative tools and video conferencing. This flexibility will enable the course to be studied anywhere in the world (with some requirements regarding time zones).
Students will be able to register for:
- The whole Master’s programme (MA)
- The Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip)
- The Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert)
- Individual modules (with or without assessment)
- A selection of sub-module lecture/tutorial series (not assessed)
Organisations that wish to develop their use of virtual worlds for education or training are welcome to enquire about bespoke pathways for groups of learners.
The MAEVW is due to start in September 2012
You can apply to take part in the course now, subject to its successful validation. For further information, and to be added to our email list to receive further updates, please fill out the form on the top-right of this page.
