eMarking: multimedia feedback

There is a growing body of evidence about the effectiveness of rich-media assessment feedback. This can include imagery, sound and video, and can be either used as individual or group/generic feedback. Below you can find examples on how to create this type of feedback.

Initial considerations

Multimedia feedback can be very engaging and effective, but there are a number of issues that you might find helpful to consider:

  • › Do you have the necessary time and equipment required to create multimedia feedback?
  • › Will your students require any specialist equipment and/or software to be able to access the feedback?
  • › Aim to keep media files short: 5-10 minutes is a good target length.
  • › Structure your thoughts before recording: type a list of key points you want to make in the recording.
  • › Be prepared for the possibility that a student might require the feedback in an alternative format: your list of key points will make this easier.
