E-learning Course Design

We recommend putting some serious thought into how you design your course in Blackboard and what tools you might like to make available to students. To see how the ELDU have applied E-Learning course design to Blackboard, please see our example Blackboard modules (available internally only).

Tools to use within Blackboard

There are many tools and services that can be used to enhance Blackboard courses. They can often be created from inside the course (e.g. Wimba Podcaster) or embedded (e.g. a YouTube video). A few of these tools are listed below:

Audio and podcasting

Podcasting refers to recorded audio clips that are made available for users to listen to online and/or download to their personal players.

  • Voice Podcaster - easily record or upload audio, create podcasts and subscribe
  • Blackboard Voice - audio tools (inc podcasts, voice email) for web and Blackboard

Converting materials to web-friendly formats

How to convert Microsoft Office files (like Word and PowerPoint) into quick and effective web-friendly formats.

Adding interactivity to learning materials

The tools described here will enable you to create stand-alone quizzes in a variety of formats, and logic/decision-making puzzles.

  • Hot potatoes - create interactive web-friendly questions and exercises
  • Quandry - an application to create web-based interactive case studies

Demonstration Software

Capture screen shots or create software walk-throughs (with instructions, graphics, and audio) to help people see how software can work.

  • Viewlet Builder - create animated online presentations and software tutorials

Virtual Classroom

Real-time virtual classroom environments are designed for distance education and collaboration. Wimba Classroom can allow instructors to create fully-featured live virtual classrooms.

UWE's Blackboard Support

UWE's Blackboard Support team should be able to help staff with queries and admin issues. They have a whole website dedicated to using Blackboard and best to setup courses.
