A valuable qualification
A degree in mathematics or statistics is one of the most useful degrees that you can do. It will open up opportunities in finance, business, health care, defence, engineering, teaching – the list is endless. Employers are looking for graduates who are numerate with analytical and problem-solving skills. These are core skills within a degree in mathematics and statistics. Employers also want staff who are confident, communicate well and will work well in teams. We work at developing these skills throughout your degree.
Going Places with Mathematics and Statistics
More information on career opportunities available to graduates in the Mathematical Sciences can be obtained from: www.mathscareers.org.uk
Key features of the degree at UWE are:
- An integrated work placement
- Final year project
- Second year exchange with Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, USA
- Mathematics and Statistics taught in context, using business-standard and commercial software.
- Peer-Assisted Learning and Graduate Development Programme help you get the most out of your time at UWE.
Work placements
You are encouraged to undertake a work placement in either a commercial, industrial, public or voluntary organisation. This is called a sandwich degree. This is an excellent opportunity for you to find out about the world of work. It is also an excellent opportunity for business and industry to experience potential UWE graduates first-hand and gain some knowledge of the degree content, particularly with respect to the transferable skills they acquire. Often placement students return with a research proposal for their final year project, the results of which will benefit the originating placement company.
Placement companies:
- Audit Commission
- GlaxoSmithKline
- HEFCE Bristol
- HBOS plc
- IBM
- Inland Revenue
- Lloyds TSB
- MOD
- Office of National Statistics
- Rolls Royce
- UK Transplant
Final year projects
All BSc Mathematics and BSc Statistics final year students do a final year project. You can either choose your own subject to research - many find a problem from placement that they wish to pursue in more detail - or you can research a topic where a member of staff has expertise. Many students find that this is the most enjoyable part of their degree, a part in which they are able to show to others their use and appreciation of the mathematics and statistics that they have learnt while at UWE. Alternatively a significant proportion of students choose to do the Maths Education Project. This project includes a 10-week placement in schools and provides those students who are thinking of teaching as a career with a valuable opportunity to work in school before committing to the year's study in PGCE required by the teaching profession.
Virginia Commonwealth University exchange
This is an exciting new opportunity for exchange between the two institutions, UWE and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). VCU is situated in Richmond, Virginia, USA . Richmond is within two hours' drive from Washington DC and Virginia is a very beautiful state with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the west and Atlantic coast in the east.
BSc Mathematics and BSc Statistics students can choose to spend their second year at VCU where they will study an equivalent set of modules to those of the second year here at UWE. Students then return to UWE with their second year complete and either start their final year or, if they choose, do a placement before entering the final year.
