This project began in June 2004

Background

The project, funded and partly supervised by the Environment Agency (EA), is investigating the issues of equality and inequality in exposure to air pollutants by the population living within or in the proximity of pollution hotspots, as identified by the current UK Air Quality Management (AQM) framework.

It examines the mitigation strategies, compares air quality before and after implementation, identifies the social attributes of the population and quantifies distributional impacts of the strategies in a social context.

The research outcomes of the PhD will be to produce guidelines and recommendations for the EA and other government bodies on minimisation of such impacts, and contribute to the debate on the relationship between social deprivation and exposure to environmental pollution.
