Applying remote sensing, GIS and emission estimation techniques to air quality and carbon dioxide emissions measurements and monitoring in the Niger Delta

AQMRC Home

Mofoluso's research investigates the relevance of currently available satellite sensors to estimate concentrations of air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and tropospheric ozone) and carbon dioxide over the Niger Delta, a developing region in southern part of Nigeria. It further presents a methodological framework designed to interpolate column concentrations from satellite sensors over the entire study area using ordinary kriging interpolation techniques in ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst. The satellite sensors used to estimate concentrations of pollutants and GHGs are SCIAMACHY (total column concentrations of CO and CO2), GOME (tropospheric column concentrations of NO2) and OMI (tropospheric column concentrations of O3). In addition, the research produced a GIS-based Niger Delta Emission Inventory (NDEI) infrastructure for criteria air pollutants (CO, PM10, NOx and SO2), CH4, NMVOCs and CO2 released from various anthropogenic activities in the Niger Delta. The research commenced in January 2008. Presentations and papers developed by Mo from the research are highlighted on this page.

Mofoluso attended the 1st International Conference on the "Nigerian State, Oil Industry and the Niger Delta" in March 2008.  Details of the conference are available here.

Mofoluso submitted a paper for the Sixteenth International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and management of Air Pollution (Air Pollution 2008 Conference) coming up 22-24 September 2008 in Skiathos, Greece. The paper is titled, 'Air pollution and management in the Niger Delta - emerging issues'.

Mofoluso is also attending the 1st Postgraduate Researchers' Conference on Meeting Environmental Challenges in the Coastal region of Nigeria coming up 29-30 September, 2008 in Dundee, UK.  His paper abstract titled, 'Applying remote sensing and GIS techniques to air quality and carbon management - a case study of gas flaring in the Niger Delta' has been accepted for presentation at the conference.

Mofoluso presented a paper at the 3rd IAA African Regional Conference held at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers in Abuja, Nigeria from 24 to 26 November 2009.The paper presented was titled, 'The need for improved sensing technology for estimating emissions and concentration of pollution at ground levels in low-latitude climates'. Details are available here: Paper, Presentation.

Mofoluso made his Research in Physical Sciences Assessment and AQMRC Seminar presentation on 19 May, 2010. He presented on the progress of his research. The presentation was titled, 'Applying remote sensing, GIS and dispersion modelling techniques to air quality and carbon emission management in the Niger Delta'. Details are available here.

Mofoluso presented a poster at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2011 Fall Meeting held at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco, 5 - 9 December, 2011. The poster was titled, 'Assessing the suitability and limitations of satellite-based measurements for estimating CO, CO2, NO2 and O3 concentrations over the Niger Delta'. The poster is available here.

Mofoluso submitted his thesis on 6 January 2012. The viva is coming up on 22 March 2012.

Mofoluso made a paper presentation at the 2012 Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Conference at the Hilton Hotel, New York, 24 - 28 February 2012. The paper is titled, 'Developing an emission inventory of air pollutants and GHGs from residential sources in the Niger Delta'.
