Consultation as Science Communication?  The Case of Local Air Quality Management

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

A key aspect of this project is on how complex science is used in the consultation process of air quality management and identification of strategies that encourage inclusion of non-expert groups. Specific research questions include:

  • how is the consultation process conceived by local authorities? How do they decide on the specific processes used, who approves the final selection of methods and whom to include as non-statutory stakeholders

  • is the selection of the processes used dependant on the type of local authority, or the air quality issues it faces?

  • how are communication strategies tuned to meet the needs and interests of different stakeholder groups?

  • how is complex science communicated by local authorities and perceived by stakeholders?

  • how are stakeholder responses facilitated and is this perceived to be appropriate and inclusive by stakeholders?

  • how are stakeholder responses interpreted by local authorities? Does this vary by local authority type?
