Consultation as Science Communication?  The Case of Local Air Quality Management

METHODS

This project focuses specifically on the communication strategies used to provide effective consultation on science-based policy making. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies are proposed:

  • a quantitative survey of all local authorities in England (n=353)

  • qualitative investigation of a range of information, consultation and participatory communication initiatives designed to illuminate the experiences and perceptions of stakeholders involved (n=11).

A project steering group have been set up to advise the research team. Input from the steering group have been sought throughout the project, more importantly in the initial stages of both the qualitative and quantitative research phases to ensure that the information collected reflects the information needs of stakeholders. Details of the project steering group are available here.

The findings of this project will be particularly relevant to those involved in the air quality management process, but also amongst those undertaking consultation on science-based policy decisions e.g. climate change, waste management, contaminated land initiatives. A series of four regional workshops were organised to present our findings to local authority environmental health professionals.

Currently in the final stages of production is a "How to Guide" for local authorities on steps to better consultation practices, which will be available on this website.
