Folake Adegoke (nee Sunmboye)
Folake completed her MSc in Facilities Management in 2003, and has spent the last seven years 'moving through the ranks' of a property development company based in Nigeria.
“After completing a degree in Estate Management in Nigeria, I started work as an Estate Services Officer in the Administration department of an oil company. At this point I decided to do a postgraduate degree. In Nigeria, we place great importance on education and professional qualifications – it can open lots of doors – so I was keen to give myself a competitive edge, and my career prospects a real boost.
My decision to come to UWE was based largely on the prospectus – the environment it described was one I knew I'd enjoy, and the course sounded like a natural progression from my degree.
New Horizons
The year I spent in the UK really broadened my horizons, and gave my confidence a massive boost. The course was very practical and hands-on – I learnt to approach problems from different angles, and solve them in a logical, objective way. I also had a part-time job while I was studying, which taught me a lot about the importance of customer service. And since I graduated I haven't looked back.
Career progression
On leaving UWE in 2003, I returned to Nigeria, and within three months got a job with First Spring Realtors Limited, a property development company. I’ve been here six years now and have steadily moved up the ranks. My first role was as Head of Marketing, but I’ve also been involved in Corporate Planning, HR and Administration. I’m currently working as a Project Manager, developing a residential area of 305 housing units across 35 hectares of land. My main responsibilities are to ensure we complete the project on time, within budget and in accordance with certain guidelines.
Continuing professional development
I’ve continued my professional development in the last few years and I’m now a Facilities Management Professional with the International Facilities Management Association. My next goal is to qualify as a Chartered Facilities Manager. Ultimately, I would like to manage a facilities management company. At work I’m a real problem solver – I take the view that nothing’s impossible. And I think my years of international study have given me that confidence.”
