Dana's career in law got off to a flying start with an internship at the UN, where she networked with officials, including current Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon.

A little help from UWE partners

Dana was offered the internship after graduating in 2010 with a degree in International & European Law.  She worked with the United Nations mission in Kuwait, where she was assigned to support the Office of the Resident Coordinator, "I was honoured to meet and contribute to Ban Ki Moon’s visit to the UN House. My final year at UWE definitely helped a lot during my time at the UN. I felt prepared with the knowledge and background needed for the Human Rights internship I was given and I found myself looking over university notes and papers.  I was aware of the laws surrounding international human rights issues and I covered several international law issues on Kuwait in International Public Law and International Trade Law. I therefore was able to always complete tasks to a high standard for the UN and it was a privilege to have learnt so much about human rights and political issues in Kuwait, especially as I am a dual British-Kuwaiti national"

Choosing the University

Dana describes her time at UWE, "The Law School had formidable reviews.  My degree was rare at the time, only UWE was offering this discipline. Also, because of my mixed background, I was attracted to UWE and Bristol with its wealth of diversity and culture." Dana also believes that the Law School at UWE gave her the freedom to pursue her own path within the diverse field of law, offering a wide range of modules; "The best part of my course was specialising in the final year. I had finally completed my core modules and was free to choose those best suited to my field of interest. Classes were diverse, debates never got boring and professors always kept the classes interesting."

What happens next?

After successfully completing her internship with the United Nations, Dana worked as a Business Development manager at an environmental solutions firm. She is currently working as a trainee in-house lawyer at Fasttelco, a major internet provider in the Arabian Gulf; “practicing the new Kuwaiti Private Labour Law is definitely a challenge. Corporate and Commercial Law is a different pathway that I have decided to take on.”  Dana has clear ideas for her future, with plans to further her knowledge and skills, returning to University to study for an MA in Political Economy and the LPC. After completing her studies she intends to work in international law and politics either returning to the United Nations or being employed by the Arab Fund, Kuwait Fund, Foreign Affairs or Kuwait University.

Getting the most out of UWE

Dana made the most of her experience as a UWE student and took full advantage of extracurricular opportunities “During my years at University I helped to fundraise for different causes I believe in with UWE’s Community Volunteer Programs, worked full time with the University as a Student Warden and Ambassador, and got involved in several societies like Fencing and Horse Riding. It was a lot to take on, but I enjoyed it immensely. My university education definitely played a big role in preparing me for the work I was expected to complete. I will always be grateful to my professors and the know-how I gained at UWE. I highly recommend UWE Law School to those that take academia seriously, yet at the same time want to have some fun as a student and also give back to society; UWE really is the place to go."
