UWE graduate crowned UK Student of the Year 2010
Congratulations are in order for UWE students Robert Nichols, Jessica Winter, and Alexandru Atodosie, who scooped a host of awards at this year's Xcel Student of the Year Awards.
Jessica won the Xcel Business, Commerce and Law Award, while Alexandru took home the Xcel Economics, Finance and Management award.
Robert, who graduated in 2010 with a BSc(Hons) in Geography and Environmental Management, won both the Construction, Built Environment and Engineering Award as well as the overall Xcel Student of the Year Award.
He was named Student of the Year in light of his achievements despite numerous difficult setbacks which might easily have stopped him from completing his studies. Before studying at UWE, Robert withdrew from Exeter University to move home and care for his mother full-time after she was diagnosed with what doctors initially thought was an inoperable brain tumour. Thankfully, she was later able to undergo successful treatment, and Robert was able to enrol at UWE.
Shortly after starting his course, Robert's grandfather, to whom he was very close, passed away, then, at the end of his second year, his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Finding himself with the responsibility of being a full-time carer for his mother, he decided to take a year out from study, subsequently choosing to spread his final year over a two-year period to enable to spend extended periods at home whilst completing his studies.
When his sister enrolled at UWE to study a self-funded Law Conversion course, he volunteered to care for his mother full-time to enable her to focus on her studies and avoid the risk of her fees being wasted were she not able to complete the course - further testament to Robert's selflessness.
Despite these setbacks, and difficulties with his own health due to the effects of a trapped nerve in his neck, Robert graduated with a well-deserved upper second class degree. He continues to care for his mother part-time and is seeking work experience with a view to joining a graduate scheme.
Robert, who was presented with his award by TV presenter Konnie Huq, is described by the organisers as 'an inspiration to anyone who has faced similar challenges and a model of compassion and selflessness'.
We agree, and send our congratulations and best wishes to Robert, Jessica and Alexandru for the future.
