Getting those ideas off the ground

power+ideas

UWE is home to a number of enterprising and inspiring partnership schemes designed to get ideas off the ground.

We are the home of the nationwide Bloodhound project, a car designed to take the land speed record to over 1000mph/Mach 1.4. With a project team involving world-class engineers, our students are already benefiting from unparalleled hands-on opportunities.

We also actively help entrepreneurs make their business ideas a reality with The Ideas Factory support service and the annual BizIdea competition with prizes of £5,000 and a year's rent-free space in UWE's city centre business incubator.

BizIdea winners

Winning a Social Enterprise award in the BizIdea competition was key in setting up the vital Great Western Air Ambulance service. A team of doctors has been trained to deliver pre-hospital care, and a new group of critical care paramedics have been trained in association with the UWE School of Health and Social Care.

The latest BizIdea competition was won by Carolyn Newton with her idea for Whalebags, a range of foldable eco-friendly shopping bags. Supermarket chains have already shown an interest, so the prize money and business mentoring will help Whalebags reach a wider market.
