Working for sustainable futures

UWE understands the critical relationship between people and planet. From the way we travel to the way we build, sustainability is high on our agenda.
Our award-winning Architecture Building, designed by a UWE lecturer, was built using 'Modcell' straw and hemp panels. The development at Bower Ashton also scooped an environmental award from the Bristol Civic Society for using new technology to reduce energy consumption.
We are proud to be ranked the third greenest university in the country and, as such, we have invested significantly in bus and cycle travel, reduced our gas consumption, increased recycling, provided fairly-traded local and organic food in catering outlets and created a monthly on-site Farmer's Market. We are also piloting the Hourbike cycle hire scheme, and every February we run a month of health and wellbeing events for staff and students.
Research
UWE's Institute for Sustainability, Health and Environment addresses research at a regional, national and International level. Outcomes of this research can have significant impact on society, for example improving mobility needs of older people in rural communities, developing economically sustainable biodiesel fuel, or researching toxic emissions from commercial composting.
